I Saw Goodness Getting Drunk

“I am gone,
lost any sense of wanting the wine
of the nowhereness ask me,
I don’t know where I am.
At times I plunge
to the bottom of the sea,
at times, rise up

like the Sun.

At times, the universe is pregnant by me,
at times I give birth to it.
The milestone in my life
is the nowhereness,
I don’t fit anywhere else.
This is me:
a rogue and a drunkard,
easy to spot
in the tavern of Lovers.

I am the one shouting hey ha.

They ask me why I don’t
behave myself.
I say, when you
reveal your true nature,

then I will act my age.

Last night, I saw Goodness getting drunk.
He growled and said,
I am a nuisance, a nuisance.
A hundred souls cried out, but
we are yours, we are yours, we are yours.
You are the light
that spoke to Moses and said
I am God, I am God, I am God.
I said Shams-e Tabrizi, who are you?

He said, I am you, I am you, I am you.”

O Beloved, thou hast searched me…

“O Beloved, thou hast searched me, and known me.
Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Shekinah, thou knowest it altogether.

Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.
Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.”

“Ever since they tore me from my osier bed,
My plaintive notes have moved men and women to tears.
I burst my breast, striving to give vent to sighs,
And to express the pangs of my yearning for my home.
He who abides far away from his home
Is ever longing for the day he shall return.”

Beloved, how long?

“In a world where there are no limbs
No limbs to pull, no voice to cry with
My soul screams and my mind reams for your essence…
“Just a hair..”, “It’s all I need…”

“A little closer” I said,
Yet, I knew you were just as far
But closer somehow, seemingly more than before
“How can one be in a world afar, and them a world anew,
yet so close, but still beyond reach from you?” I said…

“There’s ice caps where I come from.”, “You see,”
“These ice caps are a sight of beauty, behold,
And atop them you reign
Reign over the All,
Yet the chill is sheer, and the days,
Too long. So alone…
This is what my world is like.
This is what my hour is like.
When will it all be done? “

I just hope that on that day of spring
My winter will truly be over
And my lover will be the headdress
That finally keeps me covered

How long can an hour be?
How long a day?
Why then does it feel like eternity
Starts all over again
Once the minute has passed
And you are still gone away?

Can I reach out to you with no arms?
Will you have one there for me?
Can I hope that you don’t need me
Need me here so long
Need me here to brave
These elements,
so strong?

Beloved, how long?”

“No I am not roaming aimlessly
around the streets and bazaar
I am a lover searching for his beloved

God have mercy on me
I am walking around troubled

I have done wrong and sinned
and am walking around wounded

I have drunk the wine of desire
and am strolling around beloved

Though I may seem drunk
I am quite sober…”
